Probably the most common causes of tension headaches are stress, anger, and even depression. Allergies and sinus congestion can play a part too. Other factors may include lack of sleep, sugar or caffeine withdrawal, and even spinal misalignment. Of course there are many over the counter medications; however, more and more people are discovering natural headache cures. Most Natural headache cures are relatively inexpensive.

Headaches caused by stress and muscle tension are usually soothed by applying an ice pack to the neck and shoulder area. This helps with the inflammation. When you are under stress, the trapezius muscles tighten, pulling the vertebrae out of alignment. An ice pack applied for 20 minutes can help dramatically. It can also be helpful to put a few drops of peppermint and lavender oils on the neck and shoulders before applying the ice pack. Natural headache cures don’t have to be expensive. Also try applying a hot compress to relax the muscles. A towel heated for one minute in the microwave or a hot water bottle works well. Physical therapists recommend alternating hot and cold compresses using each for 15-20 minutes.

Another good natural headache cure is to make a cold compress by dipping a towel into ice water that has been infused with a few drops of peppermint and wintergreen essential oils. The oils used together seem to have a synergy that penetrates aching muscles and is very soothing in relieving the tense muscles, which in turn soothes the headache.

When sinus congestion is the culprit, another of the natural headache cures is to massage the sinus cavities with a drop of lavender, myrtle, or eucalyptus oil on your fingers. It is very beneficial in relieving the congestion and helping the sinuses to drain, thereby helping to get rid of the headache. Also, diffusing the eucalyptus oil into the room can be helpful in relieving congestion.

Unfortunately, when the headache is from caffeine or sugar withdrawal, one of the best natural headache cures is to detoxify your body, which takes time. Drink lots of water! Usually after 12- 24 hours of refraining from sugar and caffeine the headache will begin to diminish and most likely, by the second day your headache will be most improved or gone completely. Some of the natural headache cures mentioned above will help to give you relief while your body is cleansing itself. A good old fashioned fast for a day or two is an excellent natural headache cure when toxins are causing headache symptoms. Of course, when other medical conditions are present it is recommended to ask your doctor before starting a fast.
