As some time or another we have al suffered from tension headache.  Some people feel like they have a large rubber band around their head whilst others think their head has been put in a vice and squashed.   . Tension headaches can come in several forms and the pain is either quite mild or can be very severe.  The other thing is that they can come and go in just a couple of hours or they can come and stay for a weeks.

Doctors refer to the two different types as either episodic, which can last just a few minutes to a couple of hours and only occur a few times a month.  The second type is chronic.  Chronic headaches are more serious and they can occur 15 days or more per month and seem to much more frequent with women than they with men for some reason.  Chronic tension headaches can often be far more constant in nature.

Symptoms

Apart from the pain that you get there are other signs that you may experience:

  • Your scalp, neck and shoulders may become tender to the touch.
  • Fatigue – people often find it hard to sleep
  • Concentration – generally people with tension headaches find it hard to concentrate
  • Loss of appetite

The above are just some of the symptom but not necessary exclusive and may require your doctor’s help in some instances

Treatment

ibuprofen, aspirin or acetaminophen are often all that is required to treat a tension headache.  Which one you take will depend on your preferences and own medical needs.  It is often best to try different brands and formulas until you find one right for you.    You may find that you need to take a combination of medication to achieve the right result.  For example, Excedrin includes aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine for maximum benefit.

Before taking over the counter drugs or any other type of medication for a tension headache it is important to remember that if you take too much it can be dangerous so first of all consult your doctor or pharmacist to make sure the medication is safe and suitable for you (especially if you are taking other medication)
